Customer case Lugt Lisianthus: `In the greenhouse we keep the peace and in the processing area we have everything centered.`

The brand new Lugt Lisianthus building in Monster is impressive. Every week around 600,000 flowers are harvested here, using the most modern techniques, on an area of 5.8 hectares. The new Bercomex installation plays an essential role in this. We spoke to co-owner Richard van der Lugt about this.

Lisianthus is the future!

Richard explains: “My father and his two brothers already had a location with year-round Lisianthus, and another location Freesias combined with Lisianthus. In 2007 they decided to give up the Freesia and also renew the second location to grow Lisianthus all year round. This really appealed to me and was the time for me to start working in the company. I am responsible for the technical aspect of the company. Things like crop protection and maintenance, but also keeping the machinery running. So I was also closely involved in devising the new flower processing installation.”

Total solution

“It is not the first time that we have worked with Bercomex. In 2007 and 2009 Bercomex also supplied flower processing installations to us. Due to our long relationship, Bercomex was now again at the top of the list. The new installation consists entirely of Bercomex machines: 4 Flora V-Masters with a flower line, but also a bucket filling and transport system with a RackMaster.”

“The employees in the greenhouse harvest the Lisianthus, after which the flowers are transported to the processing area via underground transport. For this we have built a 5 meter wide tunnel of 270 meters long, in which 4 conveyor belts run. At our other location, in Honselersdijk, we have both underground transport and path harvesters. We like the underground transport there so much that we soon knew that we would opt for completely underground transport for the new location in Monster. In the greenhouse we keep the peace and in the processing area we have everything centered. We now process an average of 15,000 stems an hour.”

Change auction containers in no time

“The most unique part of our Bercomex installation is the bucket filling system, which consists of a MultiFill, ContainerFill and a RackMaster. This combination allows us to quickly switch between different types of buckets per machine. And thus meet the requirements of the market: being flexible and customer-oriented. It is also a lot more pleasant for our employees. The buckets are lifted by a lift at their workplace, so that they no longer have to do this themselves. And that makes the work a lot less intensive.”

Step-by-step

“The challenge with the bucket system was that the bucket must be delivered to bunch every station on time. That was quite difficult in terms of supply capacity. I sometimes wondered whether what we had come up with on paper actually worked in practice. This was also a huge challenge for Bercomex. Which partially caused that the delivery of the new installation was considerably delayed. I must say that the Bercomex technicians have taken this up very well. During those weeks they did everything to get the installation up and running as quickly as possible. Despite that setback, it is nice to see that, how we have thought it out in advance, also turns out to work really well in practice.”
