At the Middenweg location in Hem, North Holland, everything revolves around speed, efficiency, and quality. Here, Ronico, a third-generation family business, processes millions of tulips each year. With four locations and a team of about 150 to 200 employees (rising to 300 in peak season), Ronico is one of the biggest players in the tulip sector. “We force around 150 million tulips at this location alone,” says Twan Koster, who is responsible for processing. “Everything is geared toward maximum efficiency, from bulb to bunch.”

Furora’s as an essential link

In this, the cooperation with Bercomex is of great value. Ronico works with no less than ten Furoras. “That happened fast,” Twan says with a smile. “But with the volumes we handle, you simply need reliable and flexible machines. The Furora has become truly indispensable.” Each Furora can process up to 18,000 stems per hour, a capacity that Ronico fully utilizes. The tulips are bunched with great precision: straight, uniform, and tailored to each customer’s specifications. “One customer wants bunches of 36 centimeters, 22 grams. With the Furora, we can achieve that down to the millimeter.”

Flexibility

What makes the Furora unique is its flexibility. Ronico supplies various supermarket chains at home and abroad, each with its own requirements. “One customer wants bunches of seven, another eight, or even fifteen. Try making neat, straight bunches of 15 tulips by hand, that’s nearly impossible.” That’s why Ronico is very pleased with the flexibility and options offered by the Furora. “We can use different settings per bunching station. If a tulip is just a bit too short for one buyer but perfect for another, we simply redirect it to another station. It’s ideal, everything can be done in one operation. And it saves us an enormous amount of labor hours.” Since Ronico handles its own packaging and works closely with suppliers and customers, the supply chain is perfectly aligned. “We don’t have to rebunch anything at our other location nearby. That saves us a lot.”

Smart planning

The benefits of automation go beyond speed alone. “We not only have ten Furoras here but also Bercomex conveyors, de-bulbers, and binding machines.” Thanks to Bercomex’s complete system, and its integration with an advanced schedule, planning has also become much easier. “We know exactly which tulips need to be harvested and processed, and when. Each batch gets its own label, and the system tracks it from start to finish. That brings peace of mind to the operation.”

Twan emphasizes that the support from Bercomex is also crucial. “Of course, you run into teething problems at the start. But Bercomex was always quick to respond. That makes for a great partnership.”

Automation as a growth driver

Still, Ronico isn’t standing still. In the coming years, the Middenweg site will be further expanded, including the development of a second cultivation layer across the company. This growth will also increase the need for capacity. When asked how he sees Bercomex’s future role at Ronico, Twan gives a clear answer: “In five years, there will definitely be more Furoras here. And hopefully, we’ll also be working with more Tulip Pickers,” Twan expects. “The goal is to run everything during the day without needing an evening shift. That brings calm to the company, and you can feel that throughout the organization.” Ronico’s future is one of continued growth and smart technology.
